ID-5100 - HRD Setup
The manuals for your radio, the version of HRD you are using and the interface you are using can be your "BEST FRIEND" when setting up HRD.  Please keep them handy at all times. The ID-5100 requires a control cable coming either from a Serial port on the computer or a USB/Serial converter cable from the computer to the radio. This type of connection is required for all Icom radios. You can contact one of our recommended suppliers to obtain the proper CI-V cable for an Icom radio, however, the standard Icom CI-V cable will have to be MODIFIED in order to work on the ID-5100.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  A standard Icom CI-V cable, which connects to the SP-2 jack on the back radio, WILL NOT WORK with the ID-5100 and needs to be modified by the user. 
  
The standard Icom CI-V cable has a monaural plug on the end that plugs into the standard CI-V port with the wires connected to the sleeve and tip of the plug.  This is NOT the case with the ID-5100.   Page 13-16 in the ID-5100 Advanced Manual indicates the proper wiring of the CI-V plug which is different for IC-5100.  Since the CI-V cable plugs into the SP-2 jack on the radio,  a stereo plug is needed with NO connection to the Tip and wired with connections to only the Ring and Sleeve of this stereo plug.

Radio Preparations

In the radio itself, enter the menu items and make certain they are set as indicated below.

Data Speed:   Set to 9600 to start 
CI-V Address:   (Default: 8Ch) 
CI-V Baud Rate:   Set to 4800 
CI-V Transceive:   (Default: OFF)

When you have finished setting the menu options in the ID-5100, run the HRD software and proceed to configure the connection between the radio and the computer.

On the HRD Rig Connect Screen, set the following items on the “New” tab as indicated below.
1. Company: Icom
2. Radio: ID-5100
3. Com Port: If you’re not sure of the Com Port, use “Auto-Detect”
4. Speed: 4800
5. CI-V Add: This item will be automatically selected to the default setting.
6. Flow Control/Interface Power: Check the RTS option ONLY

Check to make certain there are NO OTHER CHECK MARKS in any of the options in the lower portion of the connection screen. At this time, we are ONLY interested in making the Rig Connection between HRD and your radio. The other options can be selected AFTER we’re sure we can get the radio connected and controlled by the HRD software.

Double-check your settings, at this point, since some might change when making other selections. Be especially alert for the proper Speed setting since changing the setting on the Flow Control after setting the speed can cause the speed to revert back to some default setting in HRD. Once you have double checked your settings and are sure they are correct, click the “Connect” button to begin the connection process.

If you have selected the “Auto-Detect” in either the Com Port or the Speed fields, you will see activity in the Status window. HRD will check each Com Port on your computer, at every speed available, until it finds the proper Port and Speed combination that will connect to the radio. When the connection is made the main HRD Rig Control screen will open.
